Swaying, and then up over the side. Simon caught her before she hit the floor. Eased her down and smoothed back her hair. Caught her wet and naked; she wasn’t breathing. Simon stroked her ribs, her chest and heart. Breathed into her nose and mouth, counted the seconds of her life slipping away. “Mei Mei, please,” he begged and tried to press all of the air in the cargo hold into her empty lungs. Ignored the heavy silence around him and that was it. Not enough time even for the infirmary. Just breathless River on the floor unmoving. end |
